Holiday Programs

Shop with a Cop

Over 300 uniformed officers volunteer their time and partner with a deserving child for a fun-filled day at the annual “Shop with a Cop” event. Youth participants, selected from local elementary schools by counselors and teachers as well as officer referrals, and their law enforcement companions enjoy breakfast and a private animal show at SeaWorld before embarking on a holiday shopping spree at Target.

In its 21st year, Shop with a Cop is an annual event sponsored by local law enforcement agencies, SeaWorld, Target, STAR/PAL, and the San Diego Crime Commission. Each year, over 300 law enforcement officers from various local, state, and federal agencies participate in this event, co-hosted this year by the La Mesa Police and El Cajon Police Departments. The aim of the event is to not only provide children with a happier holiday season, but also encourage positive interaction with law enforcement.

Grinch Production

Each winter, 600 youth from Title I elementary schools across the City and County of San Diego attend a production of The Grinch at the historic Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park. Thanks to the Old Globe Theater, Audrey Geisel, and the San Diego Unified School District Police Department, these youth attend the performance with School Police officers, as well as officers from STAR/PAL. After the play, the kids enjoy their picnic lunches in beautiful Balboa Park. This program introduces children to the joy of theater, as well as provides a positive interaction with law enforcement.
