How can you get involved?
For Educators
Guest Speaker Availability
If you are interested in having a police officer and/or STAR/PAL staff visit your class for either a single presentation or a series of presentations, please feel free to contact STAR/PAL’s program manager. Presentation topics include healthy teen relationships, mental health and wellness, smart social media, juvenile law, bias & stereotyping, gang awareness, and others.
Storytime with an Officer
This program is designed to connect law enforcement officers with elementary aged children (K-5th) in a fun and interactive way. Officers visit classrooms, either in person or virtually, to read aloud a fun and entertaining picture book, focused on a character-building trait, followed by a question-and-answer session. This program allows children to make personal connections with officers in a safe environment and, in turn, helps foster a positive relationship with and positive opinion of law enforcement.
For Youth
STAR/PAL’s Youth Center is open Tuesday – Thursday from 4pm-6pm, offering the following programs:
WE CAN
(6th-8th grades)
WE CAN is a mentoring program for youth in grades six through eight. Law enforcement officers facilitate this program where youth are given the opportunity to develop their personal awareness and decision-making abilities through activities and presentations, build self-confidence and participate in civic service engagement projects.
TUTORING
(Middle & High School)
If students are having difficulty with homework, school projects or just need a place to complete their assignments, they are welcome to stop by on Wednesdays between the hours of 4pm-6pm.
Point Loma Nazarene interns volunteer their time to assist students with homework and projects during these tutoring sessions. Students are able to sign-out a laptop to complete their assignments while in the youth center.
MAKING CHANGES
(High School)
MAKING CHANGES engages youth in grades nine through twelve in civic service activities while also giving them a chance to build critical skills in areas like public speaking, financial management, and community involvement. This program helps teens develop leadership skills and nurtures awareness about the ongoing impact of their choices and actions on their own lives and the lives of those around them.
